Each court which reviewed the evidence ruled that Terri's wishes were to end her life if she were in such a state. So, why were her wishes ignored? It sounds like you and I are both uncomfortable debating the issue of Mrs. Shiavo. Could it be an issue of time and condition? Meaning, did her condition worsen over time? A recent brain scan of her and a healthy one were put up on a TV show. There was a lot of black on hers in the middle. A couple of nurses that had cared for her indicated that at the times they had cared for her, there were signs of awareness. If her condition had degraded, could the timing of the husband's request to "honor her wishes" be appropriate? I am a believer in Ochams razor. Once your remove the unlikely, that which remains is the explanation. If most people were honest in their statements, then Terri must have been mentally aware, and her condition worsened later. If some used Terri Schiavo as a football for political gain, then shame on them. Some in the news media focused on her case, others virtually ignored it. The Florida Governor tried to use his political capital to keep her alive. The US Congress passed a law that was signed by the President. It was not even given a fair hearing. Is that a story? Are the outlets which ignored it guilty of partisanship? It is interesting that the predictable liberal outlets polled to find out if Republicans gained or lost because of the focus on Terri. Do you ask yourself why Republicans did not poll to find out they were losing? Maybe political calculus was not their goal. Maybe Republicans were disregarding political cost to do what they believed was the right thing. I am inclined to believe what you said about the Catholic Church. There have been reports of tunnels excavated between monasteries and convents with ancient aborted fetuses unearthed. Maybe the church has had troubles for many years? You said: Can a great man still fail in such a leadership position? Sure. The Church has, IMHO, gone backwards in the last 25 years. Do you think that another Pope would have been a better leader for the church? Is there a leader on the horizon that can lead the church out of the wilderness?
