Of course you are right about the American weight problems. Every time I get on some little connector-flight airplane I look around and pray that some of the people around me are not boarding my plane. One time they actually had to move a couple of guys forward so that the plane would fly level!

Not only do Europeans eat more sensibly, on the whole, than many Americans, but they walk a lot more. But walking won't take care of everything! We walked almost a hundred miles (I have an accurate pedometer) in Paris, even with a Carte Orange allowing unlimited bus and metro rides for a week of our two-week stay; but when I got home I had lost exactly ONE POUND! There were very generous breakfasts at our hotel.

Maybe it's just that at home I live in the vicinity of a university that enrolls about 10,000 young women that I am comparing with what I saw in Paris.

I will say that the young Czech women that one sees in Prague are, as they used to say, absolute knockouts. Furthermore, they get up and offer their seats to me on the crowded trams! Of course, it's a decidely mixed pleasure to realize that you are reminding them of their parents or grandparents.
