Oh. I get it now. Sorry for the slow uptake: I didn't get that point. It is true that when you hit about 40-50 things stop working as well so I wouldn't dismiss the old doc completely. But gingivitis does get worse for the elderly. Another sad fact like closeup vision. My near-field vision went to poop in about 6 months after I turned 42 going from about 4 inches out to 12 inches. It was amazing how fast it changed. In my teens I could focus at about 1 1/2 inches from my eye. I now have bifocal prescriptions.

Am I really missing the point? Perhaps. But my point is that while things like vision start deteriorating rapidly in your forties, not everyone gets sick when they age. The American diet, rich in milk and meat products, is heavily implicated with heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Do you think heart disease kills 50% of people in societies that are vegetarian, or nearly so? No! Do you think I waste my time talking about how health a plant-based diet is just to hear myself type? It is because many of the diseases we associate with aging really are the result of our extremely unhealthy diets (and lack of exercise, as well).
