Can you cite examples where a majority of judges 'create new rights out of whole cloth'? There are always a few screwballs; that's why the court system allows appeals and is hierarchical. However, I believe this 'activist judges' attack is merely a means of moving the spotlight away from the Republican majorities record in the past few years. Tom DeLay is a prime example of how power corrupts. He not only runs roughshod over established Constitutional law, he also does so over time tested methods of balancing the power between the parties. His gerrymandering in Texas sets a dangerous precedence of abuse of power by the majority party at the state level. His threatened 'nuclear option' on fillibusters does the same in Congress. His veiled threats to judges, and absurd proposals to limit the power and terms of judicial appointees, attempts to upset the balance of power between the branches of government. This man is willing to rend the equillibrium of government power for his silly, short-sighted political gains. Upsetting these balances will have a drastic long term effect on the balance of power between parties. I repeat that Tom DeLay is the biggest threat to our Constitution today. As far as Communism, I'm not sure what people think Reagan did to make it collapse. He happened to be the President when it started its collapse. Do people really think that the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact collapsed because Reagan said "Tear down this wall?" They claim that our military buildup somehow caused the collapse, ignoring the fact that the percentage of GNP that the Soviet Union spent on the military did not increase during the Reagan era. Communism did not collapse because Reagan scowled at it. It collapsed because Gorbachev allowed more openness with the West, and once the people saw how the West really lived, THEY tore down the wall. Gorbachev thought he could control the fall, but it spun even out of his hands. The Soviet Union collapsed once the veil of lies was lifted from the eyes of its people.
