[Just for record<g>]--India’s GDP to overtake China’s, says expert
Posted online: Wednesday, April 06, 2005 at 0000 hours IST

WASHINGTON, APRIL 5: Continuing population growth and development of a modern economy propelled by advanced technology are likely to push India’s gross domestic products (GDP) past that of China by the middle of the century, according to economist Paul Erdman. "In many ways, India’s prospects in the 21st century are superior to those of China. The institutional framework in the two countries could hardly stand in greater contrast," he says in an article for Marketwatch, published by Dow Jones. Mr Erdman says India is a "full-fledged democracy" while China remains a communist state, "under one-party governance."

"India has the advantage of a huge university educated pool of top-notch scientific, technological and managerial manpower that has the unique advantage among Asian nations of being able to think in English," he says.

What is generally not appreciated is the entrepreneurial aptitude and skills that have developed among educated young Indians due to time spent in Silicon Valley, the economist adds. Many Indians hone their technological skills at Hewlett Packard, discover and explore the sources of venture capital and then return to India.

THOUSANDS DEMAND MUBARAK QUIT (This part of the world is becoming interesting to watch!!!!)
6.4.2005. 11:53:53

Thousands of Egyptian students have staged demonstrations at university campuses to urge President Hosni Mubarak to resign.

An estimated 8,000 students at five universities in Cairo and the Nile Delta called for the government to lift its 24 year old state of emergency.

Authorities have used the emergency laws to arrest members of the Muslim Brotherhood in raids to prevent demonstrations.

The group has staged protests in the last three days and is planning a campaign with the tagline “Arise, Egyptians, freedom calls you.”

They want political reform to ensure genuine multi-party presidential elections and reject any attempt to install Mr Mubarak’s son to succeed his father.

Security sources say the students did not leave the campuses to avoid confrontation with riot police.

Egypt has made small steps towards reform with government proposals to overturn the constitutional selection process for the president.

The old system uses a referendum to elect a single candidate backed by parliament.

But Egypt’s opposition fears the plan will not institute real change and will only favour Mr Mubarak.

He has been president since 1981 and faces re-election in September.
