"Theory here would have it that I should sell my house, buy a new car, pay for the dental work and then buy my house back cheaper in a few years with the leftover windfall from the RE bubble."

Would a reverse mortgage work also for those qualified? Get the bank to give you a reverse mortgage for the appraised price, live like a king until its time to croak ,and let the bank worry about the left-overs!

I drove a few weekends a lexus ls 400, then an infiniti Qx4 (both some richer friends cars) and then bought a Toyota MR2 Spyder for myself - often me and my friend would take these vehicles to panama city, daytona or around the smaller towns in georgia where we lived at the time hoping to attract a certain type of individual - alas we were often confronted in parking lots and driveways that we were "rich doctors kids" and stuck up snotty millionaires. People for the most part in these places had a very negative initial attitude of us driving around in these vehicles. Our friends with corvettes and escalades said they got similar treatment. One day I came out of the walmart and my spyder had been keyed all to hell - I decided no man is an island in this world and sometimes we only live by the grace of others and sold out to an old dodge caravan minivan as not to antagonize my fellow man who thought I was so much better off - no one keyed it but one night me and my friend were driving around a bar and these sweet 2 redneck girls said we would hang out with you but a real man has a nice car, not a beatup minivan - my friend said what do I need to drive up then to get on your list sweetie - a VETTE? she said NO dummy - I am not like that, but at least a nice new civic or toyota - the funny thing is - about a month earlier we had driven up on this same couple walking to the college in the 2 seat MR2 spyder Toyota and tried to make the joke of asking them do they want a ride and one of them actually started to get in the car before her brain engaged and realized the car only had 2 seats and me and my friend were occupying them - when he REMINDED this sweet princess he DID have a toyota last time and I guess then she rememberd us she shot him a bird and starting the verbal cussing match which my friend always loves to engage in.

I am without vehicle now - and take the bus and city transit most places and meet many interesting people I never could have before or walk or bicycle - I miss my vehicles Grace sometimes, but I simply could no longer justify insurance, gas, payments and maintenance.
