I would have said government in response to his question (where the ___ are the jobs), but here state jobs are even getting whacked lately.

I don't know if whacking of state positions are allowing for growth in federal positions, but if I had to guess, I'd guess so ... the fed government knows only one mantra -- feed me, feed me.

It's like the guy in that Monty Python movie. One more wafer ... just one more ...

Up until being separated from my employer late last year, every job I had worked in my short 20 year career was in some way dependant on government largesse ... almost ashamed to say it, Earlie, but the most enjoyable job of the four I have held since I graduated from college was when I worked directly for the state. I guess because there was no incentive for stepping on someone else to get ahead.

When I worked for a defense contractor, those guys fancied themselves great entrpreneurs -- sucking at the governments teat like they were. Same is true of the utility I recently worked for -- great entrepreneurs, they were, nevermind the fact that they had a government guaranteed exclusive franchise. Oh well ...
