Smallpops: Great article! I was surprised by the "Desktop dual cores in June" claim. Isn't that way ahead of schedule? Also, the "AMD may have lost Dell" comment is ironic - how can one lose what one has never had?

re: In an attempt to encourage rapid adoption, AMD will sell some of the new chips at the same prices as the corresponding single-core models they'll replace, a source familiar with the products said.

From the context I think they mean same price at equal frequency. If they would continue this practice for a reasonable amount of time and for a reasonable part of the available frequencies then they are creating giant leverage to increase their server market share. A reason why they may want to do this is in case they are planning to use additional manufacturing capacity that's becoming available at the end of the year for a longer term period for cpu's. In other words the choice to use performance advantage of DC to grow server market share instead instead of push ASP only is made possible by the additional capacity becoming available. I expect we might see the same thing happening on desktop but to a slightly different extent, i.e. somewhat higher prices (like Intel) for a lot better performing cores (enlarging the performance advantage compared to Intel). Just a theory so far ofcourse...

Regards,

Rink
