Hi Mike...Welcome back. I believe the reason that the Pope was so highly thought of worldwide was as your thought states:

He was intellectually consistent however in his views and set a very high standard for all peoples and all government whether he was right about everything or not

Since I am non-Catholic, I can observe his thoughts, but don't have an obligation to obey them.
