Michael,

From what I have read, and all sources on this are tainted, it would appear that the main personalities were:

Lord Mountbatten.
Nehru representing the India National Congress.
Mohammed Jinnah representing the Muslim League.
Mahatma Gandhi.

The Muslim League fought Nehru over the issue of partition (to create Pakistan) and eventually Mountbatten and Gandhi gave up and conceded it.

Not much discussed in polite society, but the displacement of people was larger than that in WW2 and the number killed was roughly equivalent to the Holocaust.

Up to that point I liked everything about Gandhi - but with Partition he starts looking like Chamberlain looking for peace, but delivering WW2.

Nothing evil here in Gandhi or Chamberlain, but just pointing out there are downsides to pacifism.
