Pretty much what you said. And they gave me plenty of notice
that post surgery that there would be a lot of pain.

"And, of course, you had pain medication. And it blocked some but not all of the pain. Definite improvement in drugs needed here."

Sure did. Uh huh. Absolutely!

"Pain is a warning signal. For years after I hurt my back, I wouldn't take painkillers for it. That pain was the warning sign I was doing something wrong and STOP IT!"

Hard to argue with that. No doubt you don't want to do more
harm. But then, there are times where reducing pain levels
can allow you to get back some small measure of your life
that otherwise would be lost to incapacitating pain. Quality
of life & all that.
