I agree with you completely about teacher pay. BTW, teachers in private schools make more and it probably wouldn't surprise you that they are more capable teachers. I went to private schools when I was growing up and the education I received was top notch. Most of my teachers had at some point in their career been university professors. So they were stacked with good teachers. Public schools can't bid high for teachers, so they are stacked with low quality teachers.

I wish market dynamics was the whole solution for our schools, but I have a big problem with that because it will widen the rich/poor divide by making sure only rich people get the best education. On the other hand, the same is true now. Only rich people can afford to send their kids to private schools and they get a better education. Anyway, complicated problem and I have no solutions, except to say that I wish I received school vouchers so that I could send my kids to private schools, like my parents did for me.

GV, RE: "Toyota, consistently innovative company that it is, has bet a ton of money on the hybrid market and is reaping the rewards right now"

Does Toyota have to spend $5B per year on medical costs like GM does?

RE: " Capital investment is finally flowing into energy and out of other areas."

Californians saw $1.5B flow from Calif to Texas during the oil trading thievery. They should get their money in a more honest way.

RE: "The energy business has an amazing ability to self-correct and it is happening again right now. It won't help the economy in the short run (say, over the next couple of years"

A few years? Wait a minute, let's back up here. It takes the energy industry a few years to correct itself, not a decade, right? It's already been a few years. There won't be anyone left in hightech if we have to wait for an entire decade.

How long do you think this will take? (Sincere question here.)

A few years from now would total an entire decade. That's very long.
