As the old joke goes [Ghandi apparently], European interviewer: "What do you think of European civilization?" Ghandi: "I think it would be an excellent idea". As you say, the bad is externalized, which gives me the creeps. Even now in NZ, we have externalization of the evil Nazi racists while we are in the very process of creating exactly what the Nazis did, but in a less civilized way. Maoris rant on about the holocaust they suffered, but it wasn't a holocaust in the slightest. If looking for a NZ holocaust, an excellent example was the 19th century Taranaki Maori invasion of the Chatham Islands, enslavement and cannibalisation of the local Moriori. John Tamihere, a NZ Maori [half-caste] politician, has got in trouble for saying he's sick of hearing about the Holocaust and being made to feel guilty. Which is ironic because I'm sick of hearing about the Maori holocaust by the evil English colonists and the absurd 1840 Treaty of Waitangi which is an apartheid document, complete with Homelands, which made sense at the time to all involved. So while we bemoan the wicked Nazis, and so do most people, the general political thrust around the world isn't a lot different. It just hasn't degenerated to the economic shambles of the 1930s with endemic militarism, authoritarianism and tribal megalomania. Give it time and another Great Depression. People trot out the boring cliche "Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat this boring cliche", but then go on to recreate exactly the circumstances leading to the same old genocidal thieving conflict.
