This is what I am wondering; Has the semiconductor sector ever formed a major bottom without the rest of the market forming a major bottom too?

I don't believe it has and I'm not sure it can. But I'm willing to admit there could be a first time. As recently as January 2005 many sectors of the market were setting cyclical highs. The cyclical high for the SOX was January 2004. The cyclical high for AMAT was actually November 2003!

My thinking is that AMAT and nearly any other semi equipment stock will outperform again but not until the rest of the market forms a major bottom. This is of course only my opinion which could of course be well off base.
