would dry up overnight

Since this risk will most likely never go away, you would be better off not buying the sector at all if this is a concern of yours.

RE: "...what happens if LRCX and NVLS merge and develop some new
technology and a patent portfolio that change the
technological landscape for how chips are fabricated?"

They will NOT merge!

RE: "...what if China invades Taiwan."

They will NOT invade!

RE: "... what if pigs fly."

They will NOT fly!

RE: "...reality is another."

Another world, far away from yours.

"Or what if China invades Taiwan. Chip equipment sales would dry up overnight. "

I disagree. People need chips so they would be forced to build plants in countries that are safe from invasion. My guess is if CHina invaded Taiwan, then the US would cut all economic ties with China and there would be dollars spent to do business in the US again. China won't invade because of this.

I remember in the Cold War days of the 1980's that we were not allowed to build components for the US Military that were manufactured anywhere but the US since they wanted a secure supply should a war start.
