Dear Mike: In telling you what I know it a personal experience and not one of second hand. I grew up in the Episcopal Church. I now go to a baptist church where if you would 'disrupt the service ' by speaking in tongues you would be asked to leave.

Tongues has nothing to do with being a Christian or not being a Christian. The bible is rather vague about the explanation of tongues. For example the Baptists say they do not practice speaking in tongues however you will find a Baptist hard pressed to say there is not such a spiritual gift.

Tongues is a beautiful heavenly language. Why will God use tongues in an individual. Prophecy is for the edification of the church. Tongues is for the edification of individuals.

Upon salvation the Holy Spirit enters every person and indwells believers. To some this is called a baptism of the holy spirit and hence the confusion.

I believe that the speaking in tongues is a baptism of the holy spirit but a distinct and separate baptism. It is therefor a baptism with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

At the day of Pentecost many believers went about the city and were speaking in languages of people of foreign countries although they had no knowledge of the other countries.

Before Christ left the earth he mentioned that it would be expedient for him to leave because he knew that the Holy Spirit or his 'substitution' would follow him. He was limited in space and time but the Holy Spirit is not limited. What Christ did was with the help of the holy spirit and that is how all Christians must operate in the kingdom of heaven.

The evidence of tongues is to me the evidence or one way of God expressing himself on the earth. He can and will operate in a multitude of other ways and this is only but one way that God will operate on the earth.

Another aspect of tongues is that it a strange language to our common enemy the devil. The bible says that the devil knows not the mind of man. Put another way, satan cannot read your mind. He hears what you say. But so many times we give ourselves away and are defeated by satan because we talk too much. Don't give yourself away. Keep your hopes and dreams just between yourself and God. Say less rather than too much.

Maybe what I am doing now.

Serioulsy.Praying in tongues you can do when you don't know what to pray for, I let the Holy Spirit do my talking for me and satan knows not what to say or do in return.

Tongues is for the asking. God will give his 'gift' to those seeking them and asking for them. Tongues is only one gift. There are many others. Exortation. Interpretations. Words of knowledge. Prophecy. etc.

May you be blessed along the way of your walk with God.
Welcome the Holy Spirit to walk along side of you. He is the comforter. The encourager. The one that will give you wisdom. Blessings.

I speak of the factor of boldness that tongues will give a bleiever. It is a baptism of 'fire'. Boldness. You can stop traffic and witness or walk into a crowded room and stop conversation. Not to say that many Christians don't have a fire in their bellies. The type of boldness I have is seen outwardly. Others can see it on me. Literally I know a person of boldness when they walk into a room. They don't need to say a word.

God Bless.....In Christ...Gregor
