CJ, The issue isn't black and white though. Lines have to be drawn, but where?

Trying to draw the line before conception is a silly straw man. Trying to draw the line after conception isn't possible, either, since no one can agree to a point during the nine-month period when the "fetus" actually turns into a "baby."

I think it's pretty clear where the line ought to be drawn, but then for way too many people, that's just inconvenient.

And then there is the argument that my wife ran across when researching a tangential issue in an ethics class.

So every woman who has an abortion was raped?

do you outlaw male masturbation? Or forcebly impregnate ovulating women who aren't planning on conceiving?

Can you find one post anywhere on SI, or one editorial or op-ed piece anywhere, or one official statement by any political party that seriously endorses either of these ideas?

You wake up in the morning and find yourself back to back in bed with an unconscious violinist (who) has been found to have a fatal kidney ailment ... the Society of Music Lovers ... kidnapped you, and last night the violinist's circulatory system was plugged into yours, so your kidneys can be used to extract poisons from his blood as well as your own ... To unplug would be to kill him. But never mind, it's only for nine months.

If the argument applies to abortion at all it only applies in cases of rape.

What about a pregnant woman who drinks and isn't aware of her pregnancy? Is she guilty of child abuse?

No. Just as if the same woman runs over a cat, who without her knowledge walked under her tire while she is starting her car, is not guilty of animal abuse.
