That's another great oversimplification. California is the second largest exporter in total goods behind Texas, not just the largest in agri goods. It has a highly diversified economy. So this 12% of the population produces the most in agriculture AND in addition is in total the second largest state exporter in the country. BTW exporting more than 3.5 times as much as Illinois.
