"The difference between a conservative and a liberal is that a conservative believes in equality of opportunity, while a liberal believes in equality of outcomes."

Thats just rhetoric. And your anecdotal evidence just shows western bias against easterners who God knows often deserve it. What did Reagan say about "teach a man to fish rather than give him fish". I agree with that, but often times its all talk. Where are the fisherman teachers? Mike

"Some of those idiots think we want to kill all the Eagles, eat all the Salmon and Trout, shoot all the Deer and Elk, and cut down all the trees with never a thought to replenishment. They don't have a clue and we don't need them running our government."

The amazing thing is how many of them live in big cities like New York, and work in academia.

A guy I know who is an environmental lawyer owns five brand new motor vehicles, including an SUV and a Porsche Boxter, but that's OK because he's cool, ya know? Not OK for uncool people, though.

OTOH, the guy who runs the Tulane Environmental Law program, Oliver Houck, is a good guy, and really does get out in the woods and cares about balancing the needs of man and nature. Plus he has a sense of humor, which is rare among idealists.

I'll have to share the comparable wisdom from one of my Bergen County coffee shop gatherings. Plan to have one for breakfast Wednesday morning. Not surprisingly, it will come to different conclusions.

One of the interesting observations about this East/West split is Montana. Very Democratic right now.
