"an episode from deep in the German cardinal's past"

Oh great. Like he was in any way special because of either his membership or being in the Wehrmacht. He was 18 in 1945, it is not like he was in any position to be anything but cannon fodder. It didn't necessarily mean he was an ardent Nazi or anything. Even if he was, it would be hard to hold it against him. After all, too many American males of equivalent age seem bent on a criminal career, only a few actually go through with it.

Besides, if a recent book is to be believed, the Hitler Youth were active in ways that Elroy would have approved of. I know that if I were 14 and there was a government sponsored group like that, I'd have joined in a heart beat. Sure, that might mean a military commitment in the future, but until then...

What Joseph Ratzinger Did During the War

I had hoped he would not be their choice. Another very conservative pope without the charisma of a John Paul. The Catholic church is going no where fast.
