You are right back there about the taiwanese though, it is for them to decide their own future, and no one else ... mainland chinese have little claim, the indigenous were an austronesian people when came along the portugues and dutch and spanish, all of whom have greater right than han chinese, if that mattered, but it doesn't, the overriding right goes to the taiwanese ... that said, they should play it cool with the terminology ... be like canadians with our relationship with the UK, we never ever use the word 'independence', that is the stuff of mad revolution, better to go with thoughtful evolution
