Yes, there are restrictions.......particularly when its in relation to someone else. And pro-lifers are of the opinion that there is someone else involved in the abortion question. What is relatively special about the violinist argument is that it attempts to deal with that opinion, and is one of the strongest pro-choice arguments that don't rely on rejecting the idea that there is someone else involved in the abortion decision. Another example, its illegal to commit sodomy with your partner in many states. That was struck down by the supreme court, but it doesn't effect your point. We can just change the statement to "it was illegal to commit sodomy with your partner in many states", without effecting your argument. In sodomy cases there where (at least) two people involved, but presumably they all consented, and normally none of them would be killed. When it comes to behaviors that affect only our own bodies, we pretty much have full reign. You still can self mutilate yourself or pierce any part of your body you so choose. You can even kill yourself. The right to abortion more closely parallels those behaviors and not prostitution. Those wanting to make consensual Prostitution, or sodomy have IMO a stronger claim from a perspective of liberty because no one is being violated or killed. From a constitutional perspective no one of the three things (prostitution, sodomy, or abortion) is protected from state law and regulation, but the feds are not granted powers to deal with them unless they involve inter-state or international commerce. An side note. Its interesting that we can discuss one of the most controversial issues in modern history, with out all the rancor, and sarcasm, and insults, and talking past each other, that seems to have become common place in discussions of partisan politics, or the war. The disagreement about abortion is more fundamental than the current hot button political issues, but whenever they come up, the knives come out. I appreciate being able to talk in great detail, about such a difficult issue, without all the crap that comes from both sides of many recent discussions. Tim
