The example you give of the pecking order is curious, though. Any corporate executive boardroom, schoolyard, or innercity neighborhood has exactly the same social structure!

Never personally witnessed executives, schoolkids, or ghetto inhabitants torturing, then eating the least among them. Chickens do.

Have you ever been to an animal sanctuary?

Local do-gooders have a no-kill policy. Various critters get to die naturally, sometimes slowly and in pain. I throw occasional sheckels in the donation pot, help out a bit.

Got a dog I should have put down last fall. Instead, I've spent some $hundreds and hours trying to make her as comfortable as possible. Appreciation for years of fine companionship, you know.

With specific regard to chickens, spending a few months with thousands might alter your perceptions a bit.
