With specific regard to chickens, spending a few months with thousands might alter your perceptions a bit.

The same could be said regarding cows.

I spent my early childhood with calves. I visited them every day. Every one of them had a distinct personality. Their mothers were good and affectionate parents.

I think if you had just a few chickens and tried to develop relationships with them, you might appreciate them more. I would agree that thousands of anything crammed into inhumane spaces are not very appealing.

How is your dog doing? I'm not sure that keeping a dog alive once it is suffering is doing it any favors. Everything I've read about this says your vet's recommendation is usually the best course. Of course a second opinion never hurts. I have a very old cat with terminal cancer myself. The vet said she would probably be suffering by now, but gave me specific things to look for like vomiting, loss of appetite and weight loss. She is experiencing none of these things yet, and she likes to go outside and climb on the roof and bask in the sunshine and purr and cuddle with me all night.

Executives, school kids and gang members all seek out the weakest among them to bully, humiliate, exclude and sometimes actually kill, at least in inner city neighborhoods. The pecking order that chickens have is in evidence in all human populations, as well. Certainly it is no justification to treat chickens badly.

Do you have a lot of experience with farm animal sanctuaries? Even though they do rescue animals, I have never heard of them keeping animals alive who are suffering. What animal sanctuary specifically does this? I am sure it is not the norm.
