Some were later compensated a bit i think, when colonists with a conscience learned more about the tenure ... of course by that time the natives could be hard to find, being evicted and all ... there was a wide range of situations, and attitudes of newcomers, some did try to deal fairly ... but the olive tree is extremely important to the arab of Palestine, if not sacred then close to it, they have festivals centred on them, they depended economically on the fruit ... they had other trees but the olive meant more, it was a symbol of life ... in any case, it was a forced sale, the trees were lost in the process of the whole country being taken, and they knew it, so they are unlikely to have felt made whole with a few english shillings
