John - FWIW the stock buyback is more than simply covering the grants. Intel said last week that the number of outstanding shares is the lowest it's been in years.

My impression (could be wrong) is that Intel is top heavy in the number of executives

This is the real problem with options for American companies imho. Ever looked at the number of VPs at Cisco or Intel? Its mind-boggling. These people are just middle managers, and should be compensated as such. My personal pet peeve is when an entire division is moved to India for cost cutting, but the EXECUTIVES stay here with their US salaries! You have *got* to be kidding me! If a division is primarily located in a developing market, the executives need to come from there too, imho, that is where the real cost cutting savings gets passed on to the shareholder.

Intel has an Intel india president (I can't tell how much he is paid)- and I believe he sits in india. Imo he should be compensated at around $400K because that is what the Satyam CEO makes approximately. Then, all the products coming out of this India division should be run by people UNDER this guy, so they make less than him, at maybe 300K or so.

Instead, what Intel has is this india division producing all the products under the "server VP" or what have you, here. You get a ton of these product line VPs who actually have less responsibility because all the R&D is done offshore. It looks like Intel and Cisco feel a need to move offshore while still protecting their buddies' jobs here at home.
