CJ, At the time of my questioning, one of the Gospels was considered to be synthetic. It was Matthew, or possibly Mark. The reason why it was considered synthetic had to do with its degree of simularity to the other Gospels. The other Gospels differ from each other in significant ways. The first three Gospels are rather similar. It's generally agreed upon by biblical scholars that Matthew and Luke used Mark as a source for their own Gospels.
