I think the semi equips might be the right play now if you believe in a tech stock recovery. They are cheap, a lot of them anyway. Unfortunately I don't know the business of semi equips too well.

I don't understand it very well either..but I have the following points that I don't seem to get any answers for.

They get traded as cyclicals. What if....
We see a global technology boom driven by emerging markets like China/India/Africa/South America and not the US.
Sure you will get a few Asian competitors that have to play catch up in a fast moving technologies. We will see new emerging chip companies but the global demand should be a lot higher too.

The question to ask is whether we will see competitors to AMAT, NVLS, Tokyo Electron, ASML etc.. I really doubt it. So these become the global suppliers to old and new. If this is about to happen soon, we should start seeing the chip equipment stocks rebounding sooner rather than later. I am just don't know when to get into the chip equipment stocks given there are other sectors that seem to be moving a lot better.

As for competitors to Intel, that probably has even lower odds. Too big of a head start. They will get lots of new customers..just look at how well their emerging market biz is doing (beyond the sales to US PC makers).

btw--Intel probably has been stalling here after the big quarter..to give some time for the insider sellers to get out. I believe they sell no matter what the stock is doing....basically automatic type of sales (just a hunch).
