I think reunification has left a bad taste for most Germans, regardless of whether they were originally Ossies or Wessies.

A friend of mine taught classes for the Treuhandanstalt to educate East Germans. One was an accounting class for business managers and another a consumer education class. She was incredibly frustrated by both.

She particularly disliked the impassive lack of response from the "students" in the consumer education class. She confessed she yelled at them one evening saying, "My god, you graduate from this class in two weeks and still don't know how to buy toilet paper to wipe your ass with - what is to become of you?"

The Ossies I've spoken with are equally unimpressed with the lack of culture and obcession with material things in the west.
