As far as I can tell the Palestinians didn't have the "nation" part of "nation/state" either at that time. To the extent that there was nationalism among the Palestinians back before '48 it seems that it was Arab nationalism.

None of which means that everything was ok, or that the Palestinians didn't have a sense of loss or violation or unfairness about what happened. But as far as I can tell the idea that they where losing their country, or anything like a country wasn't prevailent at the time. Palestinian nationalism is a more modern phenomena, certainly a real issue but not one with a long history.
