Iraq was all about setting an example for anti-american despots in the mideast and elsewhere not to challenge us or help bin laden. It was symbolic and iraq was chosen as the weakest state. War went peachy. Neocons blew the post war part or worse yet ignored the dangers just as the flower people on this thread did. No this is not a quag--its just a muddle. No we havent lost and we did make our point but the fact that we are muddled is not good. It allows those other states to disregard the message which makes delivery of a second message more likely perhaps.
I supported the war but never expected flowers although i hoped bill and UW were right. I think a timeline for withdrawl after this new govt becomes official is the best way to get iraqis to do the heavy lifting mostly themselves. No choice if they know we are going. I do think that Bush/Cheney screwed up post combat and that Rummy has been terrible. Bush continues to reward these folks as they are the only people who can do this job. W, there are other tough guys out there who are more real than Cheney/Rummy have been. Anyway that's what i think happened. mike
