I agree. The most interesting proposal I have read is a flat tax with a choice to continue to pay under the present system. This has the best chance of being passed, because Congress doesn't have to fight the battle of stopping people from using their present deductions. The idea being, of course, that people would switch over voluntarily.

The only negative I have heard against it is that Congress would amend it later. But that is true of all tax proposals.
