Gold Mining Prospects Raise Concerns
Lander
Associated Press

Historians are concerned about plans by a Canadian mining company to dig 200 test pits in search of the best location of a possible gold mine in southwest Wyoming.

Fremont Gold wants to begin digging 200 test pits this summer near South Pass. The Oregon, California, Pony Express and Mormon/Pioneer historic trails converge in the area.

The State Historic Preservation Office has not formally protested proposed mining activity near South Pass. But state Historic Preservation Officer Claudia Nissley says the Bureau of Land Management clearly understands the concerns of historians and archeologists.

South Pass is a National Historic Landmark, where pioneers crossed the Continental Divide on their way to Oregon, California or Utah.

The area is estimated to hold one million ounces of recoverable gold. If the exploration yields good enough results, Fremont Gold may pursue full-scale surface mining.

These things crack me up. Last year the US Mint sold about 220 million bucks worth of gold coins.
