Dell won't say what the new employees will be doing for competitive reasons? Translation: we are hiring more call center employees over there so we can piss off our American home customers even more....

Dell CEO: Plan To Raise India Headcount To 10,000 In 2005

BANGALORE, India -(Dow Jones)- Dell Inc. (DELL) plans to increase its headcount in India by about a fourth to 10,000 this year to tap the local talent pool, its global chief executive said Friday.

"By the end of the year, we should be about 10,000 in India. We're growing continuously as we find the talent base and enthusiasm in them second to none," Kevin Rollins told reporters.

Rollins said the U.S. computer hardware company employs between 7,000 and 8, 000 workers in India, but he declined to elaborate on the kind of work it does in the country, citing "competitive reasons."

Dell has customer contact centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad in southern India and in Chandigarh in the north.

Rollins said Dell plans to start operations in other parts of the country as well and was currently evaluating offers by some state governments to set up operations in those states. He didn't elaborate
