You will laugh, but so far, NONE of my genealogy research is on computer...That is a goal this year to start...My goal has been to HUNT all the things I could, while I still could get them (finding living people, to find letters, pictures, stories, etc) and then to GATHER them later. Well, now I'm ready to start "gathering"....the difficult problem for me is I really like to "hunt" especially with the advent of email, queries, great sites, etc....

I'm probably going to get Family Tree Maker when I start...The Mormons have been doing this for a long time, and seem to have the bugs worked out... Will scan the pics in eventually, but want to really gather the info first. Right now, I have 4 file cabinets of info on many lines for both my husband and myself. 3 of those cabinets have many original documents and letters....

If I were going to give advice, I'd try to contact every single person whom you think might have access to the old letters, pictures, etc. Get copies of everything you can. I didn't intend to chase every living person, but came to realize in short order, that if the documents were any
place but in the trash, they would be with living people... So I HAD to find them. It has been the most amazing hunt... Every week now, I'm finding another person, or source...

Had a super thing happen in the last two months...Found a woman, through a query she had made looking for info on 2 lines...I had or knew about those two lines....one of them was my direct, and one a side line, or so I thought. She ended up coming here from CA to see me, we worked together on some of the questions, found her Great Aunt's family, because of two clues I had that she didn't know about, and now she is in contact with some of the descendants of that Great Aunt.... AMAZING story!!!

And such fun to be able to have been the catalyst to help her. BTW, I found out that the side relative is REALLY in my own family through a 2 Great Grandmother.....we really are directly related. What goes around, comes around as they say.

Have fun with this great hobby!
