I believe that FDR and group also figured that families would be a larger than the current 1.9% replacement for the 2 parents. As you know, the average family back in the 30's had several children more than 3 or 4 kids. Most of the citizenry were living on rural areas as well. More kids were needed to take care of the family farm so everyone could eat and have clothing, etc.

There is another difference I believe too, haqi. More people then seemed to want to be responsible for their own lives, and did not rely on the Government to take care of every little whim. People paid the Doctor with eggs, or other items like that if they couldn't pay with money.

Today, all too many have their hands out and want others to pay for them. All too many have not, and will not, save even a few dollars a week toward their own retirement, and yet, insist the government is responsible for their well being there also.
