In addition to proposing national health care, Nixon actually muzzled the U.S. military's hostility toward Red China. That would be the big sin.

Other than that, Nixon created difficulties for the military with the creation of the EPA, a regulatory difficulty the military is to this day attempting to have itself declared exempt from.

Other highly unsatisfactory proposals from Nixon included the notion of creating a negative income tax. However, Nixon's main adversary on this interesting suggestion was the welfare state bureaucracy which saw its existence threatened, and which managed to hold on largely intact until Clinton took an axe to the already pitifully inadequate social safety nets in America.
