The Park Service can surely tell you what to expect at Yosemite.

IHSC,

I'm from the Frozen North and have only done a limited amount of hiking in CA, OR, and WA. However, there's a Yahoo group that I've lurked on for quite some time -- has a few California hikers that post to it occasionally. Just for the hell of it, I did a search for Mt. Whitney in the messages and came up with quite a lot of hits. I didn't read through the messages, but I did notice a brief note about hiking Mt. Whitney as a dayhike via the Mountaineer's Route. It might be worth reading through some of the posts on that group to see if there's anything of interest in the messages. I think you can read them without joining, but maybe not. No big deal though -- if you have a Yahoo ID, it should just take a second to join. Then just use the "Search" and run a search for Mt. Whitney. Here's the link to the group -- hope it works.
