Even assuming those estimates are not too high (and I think they are) the point was that we were not trying to cause civilian deaths. If that had been our aim it would have been easy, even sticking with conventional weapons, to make the death toll much higher. We avoided population centers. We didn't just randomly dump bombs over the countryside either. The percentage of the land that was actually carpet bombed was low.
