If they won't enlist for money, try medals.

I agree. If you have had bullets or shrapnel whizzing by you, you deserve a medal. As Napoleon said, "A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon."

Pretty soon they will be like the Navy. I can't even remember what all my little colorful jobs were for but they sure were pretty:) I think one was for going above the arctic circle or some such nonsense. I think the Good Conduct was the only one truly earned that I cared about.
