From what I read, it was not a case of forcible rape by any means. And the boys were very similar in age. The younger boy only complained later after the fact. He did not resist.
Of course I wasn't there so I can't be sure.

It's something fairly common in the US. Two boys experimenting. Even if the older boy forced the other, 17 years is an outrageous sentence unless he almost murdered him in the process. SHould have been counselling and six months on a work farm at the most. This outrageous stuff is directly connected to the Taliban types of the religious right.

And by the way, churches are filled with closet queers. Jim Bakker was queer. Very few of these evangelicals who throw stones do not live in glass houses.
