the number of rejections is not really a statement to the quality of the school though. If I were to judge the effectiveness of some engineering school I would look at the number of obvious inventions/companies etc that originated from said school. That of course is a tough measure of quality but much more relevant than how book-smart some asian university can make a kid.

Lets put it this way- when US universities start using Chinese engineering texts in the classroom, we know we have fallen in academia. Right now it is the other way around.

Re : "Indians use Harvard and MIT as a fallback for India's most prestigious university, the Indian Institute of Technology."

That's quite a stretch and a knock on MIT and Harvard. IIT is very competitive and attracts the top talent, but IMO, The students at the very top US schools are no worse.

Beside you are comparing Apples with Oranges. IITs are great for Undergraduate studies. But when it comes to grad school, an overwhelming majority of IITians prefer (even an average) US university over anything India has to offer.

Bum.
