I hope you understand that I am not arguing for the status quo. And I hope you understand that I am not arguing for the Dems' tactic. What I'm arguing against is your insistence that the Dems have an obligation to affirmatively offer an alternative to Bush's proposal.

You think that they ought to. But your "ought" does not convey any obligation on them. We are "not in this world to live up to other people's expectations." We ignore their expectations at our risk, but their expectations do not convey any obligation on us. If you want to remind them of the risks to them of not meeting your expectations, fine. And you may want to express sadness over the expected results. Their tactic may be "withering," as you say, and they may pay for it. But it's their choice as to whether to wither or not.
