Clearcuts are warmer for A WHILE. Then the new stand grows up and they return to an ambient temperature similar to that of the original forest.

IF global warming is caused by man's activities, and I think it's more likely that global temperatures are more a function of orbital and rotational geometry of the earth, then land use changes are surely going to be high on the list of causes.

I found that statement incredible, unless the word NOT is a typo. Land use changes are not likely to have a large, direct effect on global average temperature.

Deforestation and Clearcutting ARE NOT EQUIVALENT. Clearcutting is a regeneration method that perpetuates a forest and protects the availability of water if done properly. Deforestation is a change in land use that is more akin to mining.
