CR,

Currently the United States is at War. To the best of my knowledge, the United States has NEVER run a balanced budget while at war. Even if we were to repeat 2004 over again, we'd still be at war (Kerry wasn't going to bring the troops immediately home), and still would be running a deficit. Do you really think it is wise to hold off on all future budgetary decisions till the war is over?

Now if you want to roll back on the 2001/2 tax cuts, I can live with that. Its job was to provide an economic stimulus during an economic downturn - and it did work. One could argue that the tax cuts did their job, and now it is time to reduce the deficit. I'm not sure how much the deficit would be reduced if the tax cuts were rolled back, but if it amounts to $150 Trillion, then the deficit would be around $200 billion (which is probably acceptable at a time of war) - it would certainly be a smaller deficit than the French or Germans are currently running.
