Dale, I think Ameritrade management is plenty smart and that they are intent on growing the business. They execute well and provide good service and would, I think, rather be the acquirer rather than the acquiree. They have successfully integrated Datek and are likely in negotiations elsewhere. E-trade's offer looks like an attempt at a preemtive strike to me. I don't own either but do use AMTD as my broker. ken

Dale

A long time reader and lurker but believe my first post here.

I have a different perspective on Ameritrade. I am an old Datek customer and stayed after the Ameritrade buyout. As a user/customer of Ameritrade's, I am very happy that they hopefully maintain their identity.

They have made many improvements and I believe have a very good handle on their vision of Ameritrades future. Their changes have been a bit slow in implementation but as a 30+ year participant in the HW/SW business (retired), I wholeheartedly endorse the slow cautious SW integration/changes route ... always a wise approach and especially when in their business.

The very few bugs/glitches along the way are quite remarkable when viewing the challenges of running two different platforms and ultimately integrating the platforms, databases etc.

In other words, they have been improving their product and customer experience, completing the integration of past acquisitions and appear to be on the lookout (or even a long rumored specific purchase) for new acquisitions that make sense (internal and external growth).

The no to Etrade may not be good news from a stock price standpoint, especially if one is looking for a quick pps bump ... but I personally believe it is excellent news from a company development and long term stock standpoint.

PS Again from a user/customer standpoint and based wholly on SECOND HAND info ... I would have been looking for a new broker if Etrade had been successful .. have never heard a comparative positive on Etrade or their operation up to and including their ALLEGED big role in naked shorting of certain stocks.
