Light, sweet crude for June delivery was up 25 cents at $48.79 by afternoon in Europe in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract had slid nearly $2 Thursday to settle at $48.54.

But December delivery is still near $52. The market does not believe that oil is going to make a meaningful decline.

Hey is somebody trying to tell us that AMAT and the sector aren't going out of business today? Up 53 cents in a steady climb since 14's.

Or, as usual, just setting up for maximum downside risk into the earnings.

So my headlines on my 3 newsletters today should read:

"AMAT pops into earnings expectations"
"AMAT sets up for a big drop"
"AMAT earnings and stock price expected to hover around the 16's"
