During the Clinton administration the border guard was told not to apprehend during a similar situation as the Minitemen but on the California border. This was circa 1995. By not apprehending it looked like there was no one crossing the border illegally. So the idea died for a while. Even if you issue them a work permit most of them won't sign up because they will see that as getting themselves kicked out. Also, unless you protect the border we'll have another 10 million in 10 more years. Most politicians choose to ignore this. I see your boy Newt is actually thing of running for President on a "tight immigration" policy. OK, so Newt has other issues but It's good to actually see a politician step up to the plate on the issue.
