Believe me, Nixon was a very scary guy, too. G. Gordon Liddy had plans to murder Jack Anderson and there was a very large enemies list. The torture camps or tiger cages in Vietnam were a global scandal showing our true colors back then. Woodward and Bernstein only got away with their stories because nobody was paying any attention to them. Nixon won the most lop-sided victory ever AFTER the Watergate scandal hit the Washington Post. The wing nuts called it, and some call it even today, a liberal conspiracy. One of my nut job friends used to confront me with a very difficult question to respond to. He knew that I believed that Nixon was evil, but very clever. He always asked me why I thought Nixon had suddenly become stupid enough to commit these crimes. It turned out that Tricky's ego was so large that he thought everything he did would be validated by historical judgement, so he allowed himself to be stupid enough to keep the tapes when the clever Nixon of the Checkers and Pink Lady speeches would have burned them in a heartbeat.

A similar question is asked today by my neocon friends: since I think Bush is an evil moron, how could he be smart enough to pull all the crap he's pulling on the country and get away with it. Yes, he's surrounded by people with a lot of low animal cunning. But it is his personality that is allowing the whole scam to work. How did Alfred E. Newman become the nation's Svengali?

I'm still working on the answer to that one. Something about selling his soul is probably in the final answer.
