But unconditional love doesn't mean you don't see faults and don't correct them. Many people who love their children unconditionally, would still discipline their child if they went on a rampage and hurt others. Unconditional love just means you love them anyway, and where there is unconditional love, love and disapproval can coexist, without the disapproval killing the love. Seems a very simple idea to me- but from what I read on SI, it seems like an alien idea to some, and that worries me greatly.

Re your dog who would run away-- I was reaching all the way back to childhood with my dog parable. "Mr. Chips" wasn't a puppy when we got him, but very young -- a year or less. My family loved our dogs and were very good to them, but Chips seemed aloof to affection. When we would pick him up at someone else's house, he would come obediently, but not seem particularly joyful to see us. I'm sure he wouldn't have been any different with another family. "Home" to him was anywhere you hung your hat. Love of country to me means that you never lose sight of its long history of good deeds, its generosity toward other peoples (even former enemies), and its extraordinary accomplishments as a society. It means that criticism of certain polices is always tempered by acknowledgement of the greater good it has done and the good will that it manifests. It means that you don't play into the ill-will that others hold toward your country by painting it with broad brush strokes, such as being "less civilized." It means that when you have disagreements with those in power at a given time -- you keep it in the family and don't parade it onto the world stage for all to see. That's just for starters.
